PATTERNS VOLUME 1
Quick ties
and favourite flies
£23.99

Tying an
artificial fly, casting it to a rising fish, then seeing
that fish rise and take your artificial as confidently
as a natural is arguably, the very essence of fly
fishing. There’s nothing quite like catching a fish on a
fly that you have tied yourself. If you have not done
this, you are missing one of the greatest thrills of fly
fishing.
These programmes are all about fly tying. Like all our
previous Essential Skills programmes, the techniques are
shown simply, clearly and in great detail. Even a
relative newcomer to fly tying can, with a little
patience and perseverance master the advanced
techniques. Just follow what I do step by step and it is
easy. Even for the more accomplished fly tyer, there are
some tricks of the trade that I am sure you will not
have tried before.
Have great fun tying these and even more fun fishing
them!

PATTERNS VOLUME 2
Woven flies
£23.99

Constructing the bodies
of artificial fishing flies has historically always been
a question of wrapping various materials around the hook
shank. However, there is much more a fly tyer can do
with body materials than merely wrapping them around the
hook shank. Probably the most dramatic alternative to
the traditional method is ‘Weaving‘.
This programme is all about woven fly bodies. Like all
our previous Essential Skills programmes, the techniques
are shown simply, clearly and in great detail. Even a
relative newcomer to fly tying can, with a little
patience and perseverance master the advanced
techniques. Just follow what I do step by step and it is
easy. Even for the more accomplished fly tyer, there are
some tricks of the trade that I am sure you will not
have tried before.

1. Search
and Sight Fishing
In this
video we start by search fishing for trout and grayling
on a stretch of the Upper Avon which Frank Sawyer
keepered. We then go to the crystal clear waters of the
Lambourn sight fishing for trout and grayling using his
famous Pheasant Tail Nymph.
2. The Deep Diving Shrimp and Chalk Stream Entomology
To be
consistently successful in fly fishing, some
understanding of entomology is an Essential Skill. When
kick sampling on chalk streams (spring creeks) you
always find huge numbers of freshwater shrimps, which is
why Oliver’s shrimp pattern is a first class fish
deceiver. However, for getting down into those deep
swirling hatch pools, something a good bit heavier is
required - The Oliver Edwards Deep Diving Shrimp

1. Fishing
Dry Fly on a Chalk Stream
Oliver’s mainstay dun imitating dry flies are the
Paradun and his Footprint Dun. They are both
prototypical patterns, readily matching any of the
Olives or Spurwings, right down to size 22. The Paradun
is very easy to tie and floats like a cork, furthermore
it lands correctly on every cast. The Footprint Dun is
for those occasions when you encounter really picky,
difficult fish. It takes a little more tying skill, but
this is a pattern that can often save the day.

2. Mayfly Time on a Chalk Stream
Ephemera danica, the Greendrake, is famed for hatching
in vast numbers ? ‘The Duffers Fortnight’. However, on
rivers where the hatch just trickles off, the trout can
be almost as cautious as when taking small Olives. This
is when Essential Skills come into play. Your artificial
will have to be a good imitative copy and it will have
to be presented accurately and delicately if you wish to
score.

1. Czech
Nymphing
I learnt Czech Nymphing while fishing the 1996 World Fly
Fishing Championships in the Czech Republic. Does it
work as well in the UK and the USA as it did in the
rivers of the Czech Republic? Yes of course it does! It
is devastatingly effective - what is more, I hook good
fish in places I hadn’t previously considered worth
fishing.
2. Upstream Nymphing and North Country Spiders
Upstream Nymphing can be hard work in fast riffles but
more often than not, it is a very rewarding method.
Fishing the famous old North Country Spiders square
across and drifted is a very deadly technique and a
first choice for many fly fishers on Northern Freestone
rivers.
